Impossible Abundance

There is a myth in America today that there is a war on Christianity. Most people who make that claim believe that their faith is being persecuted when they are not given free reign to persecute others. They claim that such things as diversity, equity, and inclusion are somehow unChristian.

Really? Does diversity really constitute a war on Christianity?

If there is a war on Christianity it is not being waged by diversity, equity, inclusion, love, or peace. It is being waged by anger, hate, bigotry, greed, and consumption. If there is a war on Christianity it is being waged by the forces of scarcity that want to keep people fearful of not having enough or being left without.

Mark 6 tells the story of Christ’s miracle of feeding the crowd of 4000. It is not merely a story of loaves, fishes, and full bellies. It is a story that reflects God’s commitment to abundance in the world. Because abundance is reality.

There is enough food for everyone to eat, but people starve.

There is enough shelter for everyone to be housed, but people live in our streets.

There is enough water for everyone to drink, but people go without potable water.

There is abundance of the things of this world. What is missing is an abundance of will to build a world that is committed first to love for neighbor.

Join us Sunday when Pastor Robert will explore these questions of abundance and grace in the life of the church in the world.
